How do you feel about kit prices?

Discussions : General discussion : How do you feel about kit prices?

SexxxyThingz wrote:

Hi, all thoughts and opinions are welcome!

Does a kit price affect your decision?

If its a cheap kit do you get very little, do they tell you whats in the kit?

Do you pay upfront or work off your kit? Was a deposit required?

One last question, are they honest with you immediately about what a kit REALLY costs or do they speak in tongues about how many parties you must do in order to pay it off?

Kind Regards Richy

LYFwebdesigns replied:

Hi, business kit prices do create some impact to the affordability of joining a business that is why I would recommend offering instalments or even third party loans as this would encourage people to join you. That is if your kit is too expensive. Fortunately, LR kits start from as little as $199, there are two options either Aloe Vera which contains a wide range of Aloe products worth over $400 or a certain pv value of chosen products. There is also a party-plan kit for $299 containing a wide range of items.

The entire kit contents are always listed. The kit must be purchased upfront, which is no way impossible due to how low the cost is to sign up. The business is quite clear and direct of telling people the kit price, its stated exactly on the kit order form.

Hope this helps,

The Intimo starter kit is $390 with around $1300 worth of product.

It has to be paid for up front which I have no problem with because it is usually paid for within the first one maybe two months.

Also with Intimo for the fiorst 3 months your commission is paid twice monthly instead of monthly.

with FM the kit price is $150 paid in three monthly installments. you get samples of the entire FM  range of scents, fragrance sample carry folders, pens, catalogues, all the extra info you need to get started and the FM training dvd. when you break it down all you need to sell is around 8 bottles of perfume per month for the first three months (VERY doable, and i say around 8 bottles) and the kit is paid off. from then on you start making a profit.

StampinUp replied:

Some are definately better than others!!!

Stampin Up! kit price is $324, and you receive $585 worth! I joined when they had $50 off, so got it for an even better price!

At the moment tho, it's an extra stamp set up to the value of $79.95! so also a great price! (that's a sale-a-bration special offer, so expires end of February)

The ENJO starter kit is $999 with a value of over $2,300. They give you the choice of paying upfront, or paying $0 upfront with 10% of your demos going towards payment within the 60 day high income period - which is 30% regardless of sales instead of the base rate of 20%.

They also give you the chance to earn your kit for FREE when you achieve $6000 worth of sales within your first 60 day time period.

I was going for the kit for Free thing, but failed miserably! Got a ultimate pack borrowed too $1000 worth for demo fibres, and haven't paid for that either! *sigh*

If I had my time again ... but anyways, what's done is done now!

Very different to each other! But the product sold me! So, would still would have joined no matter the price probably!

In my experience, the kit price definately affects your initial reaction and subsequent decisions.

Depending on the business formula, I would expect to pay up to $1500 for a decent kit with a payment plan or high commission pay back.

If I was to fork out this amount of money for stock I would expect a bloody good compensation plan to make it worthwhile.

For example:

Jewellery kit $1000

deposit 30% or 20% of sales from 6-8 parties to cover cost of kit.

compensation plan min 25% plus bonuses on sales, recruits etc.

With Stardust Kids the kit is £200.00 = $440.26 AUS (according to the current exchange rate)

But it's actually worth 2-3 times that (retail value).

The kit needs to be paid in full on (on application).

Stardust doesn't require any on going members or registration fee's either.

The first PP I ever joined was for jewelery.  I felt a little mis-lead when I signed up.  Anyways- the kit came to $1200!  At the meeting I was at with the upline- they informed me that I could apply for a credit card through the company to pay for my kit and then by having my X amount of parties it would pay off quickly.  Well I was a single mother at the time and didn't have a lot of money- or income (hence the reason I was signing up to sell the jewelry) and when I didn't get approved for the credit card- i figured I could use my mom as a co-signer.  Well the company had a policy where only husbands could be co-signers.  I should have walked out then- but didn't.  My mom 'loaned' me the money for my kit.  The girl who sponsored me in was horrible- and didn't do anything to help get me trained or tell me when meetings were etc...  I had my opening show- invited over 50 people- and had 1 person who showed up- who never bought anything.  I never had another party again...  what a friggen waste.

The pp I'm with now- didn't have an up-front kit fee...  which was nice.  We can go off on our own and 'start our own company', but that costs about $1500... something I'm going to do in the next 3-4 months!

CrazyBeautiful replied:

The Kaszazz Business Kit is $295 and with it you get $591.45 worth of stuff(postage is free), you get a list of everything that is in the kit. No hidden surprises at all.

You get everything you need to run your first few demos. I am still using all the original stuff from the kit and have just had to top up on things like card, etc.

You pay for it upfront, which in my opinion is better. I would be so worried that I wouldn't have enough parties to pay it off within a time period(seeing as in my current situation I can only do them every 3rd week as my hubby works fly in fly out and I do them the week he is home).

handbagsrme replied:

Hi Richy

The company that I am with is a little bit different to others.

We rent the kit.......

In the past i have been involved in another company where we bought our kit (this was sometime ago) and I think it cost me about $400 or $500 but what I found was that people were always wanting to look at products that I didn't have; hence all my commission went back into topping up the kit.

This is why I love the renting approach you pay a bond on the kit ( $450,this can be paid off in instalments) which when you finish with the company is paid back to you as long as all products are returned etc. Then a monthly rental amount ($73.65/month). We receive about 85% (around $3000 worth of products and equipment) of the current range as well as clip boards and sheets to display the products on, and everyone has exactly the same kit. This also means that when new products are released (every month) they are also added to your kit, the rental also has an insurance cover in it. After 3 years with the company you have the opportunity to be rent free, and when you become a Team Leader you are rent free. On top of our commision we have a bonus scheme, and I always encourage the ladies in my Team to reach bonus as their bonus money then pays for their kit rental. It all works really well and once up and going the consultants think it is ideal.

FM-Fragrances-Australia-World replied:

Hi Prim & Hollie,

I will throw in a little extra about the FM Kit for this thread :)

Ok the FM Fragrance kit is very simple, lighweight, easy to carry around with you everywhere ( under your arm) as it is YOUR retail shop - We do not endorse that you buy hundreds of catalogues or bits and pieces, or sell from the catalogues, as Fragrance is a very personal choice for your customer, and the FM kit comes with everything YOU need to have YOUR own Mobile retail fragrance shop.

The Kit is $150.00

Includes :

2 x compendum style A4 folder size Sample and stationary leather look Black style holders.

180 samples of product ( which covers womens, men's and childrens fragrances ) across the entire line.

Training DVD ( tell you about FM the company world wide, how to sponsor local and world wide, how to help your business grow etc)

Each kit comes with their own pens

1 x FM catalogue for Ingredients 2008 ( will be new inserts in late FEB for new range )

1 x FM marketing plan ( to show others, what we all want to know - how much will I earn, what is really in it for me )

2 x FM Numbers list (to show what the FM fragrance is Inspired by,  by numbers or Alfa, as the choice is YOURS how you wish your kit to be, it is YOUR shop)

1 x Points list ( to show you what each products point value is )

1 x Perfume/Parfume description ( to show you how to tell the differance between, Perfume, EDP, EDT, EDC )

The FM KIT @ $150.00 can be paid for a few ways...

1. You pay up front your $150.00 and it is yours

2. You Pay in installments $50.00 per month for three months, and billed on the first day of the each of the three months.

3. FREE if you sell 1200 points of perfume, in each of the months

4. Part FREE if you sell 1200 points in some of the three months..

YOU DO NOT LOOSE ANY BONUS OR PROFIT DURING THIS TIME AS PAYMENT FOR YOUR KIT

In fact you gain money and save....

Eg: Lets use March as a full month...

You sell 1200 perfume points In March...

That will give you March's $50.00  installment FREE!

That will give you a FREE Bonus from FM of just on $30.00 ( which you can use to get product for FREE, or straight into your bank account, either or FREE Money.

You will receive your instant CASH commission, 43% trade margin mark up.

We do not insist on having a min party thing, as FM is YOUR individual business to do as you see fit, you could sell that amount online with your own online shop, or at markets etc etc, why do parties when you can have an online shop working for you when you sleep. Also you don't have to think about Fragrances it is so easy, no colours to worry about, no skin types to worry about, No matching this with that - your client will either buy it, or they won't simple and easy:) Even easier is the fact with Fragrances you concentrate on one line and one line only Fragrances, you are not having to concern or worry yourself, about a bizzillion differant product lines.

Hope that adds a little more :)

One of the things I like so much about LR was the option of choosing your own products. While there are kit option eg: the aloe vera kit, the idea of being able to just choose $199 of anything is very attrative. That way whatever happens, you are not stuck with anything you would not use yourself.

The price of $199 is affordable for everyone and payable up front.

tough one!!

If it a product you love and believe in them i don't think the price would sway you to much as you r passionate about the product.

on the other hand if it is a large expense (like mine was) i did alot of number crunhing to make sure i could pay it off etc so i guess if it was highly priced then you could provide some valuable finanical info to help the decision to be made.

I think perhaps cheaper kits could attract people who are only in it short term. But that is from no expereince of mine just a generalisation based on my own research.

With the pp i was doing your kit could be whatever you wanted. you bought items at 1/2 price to fill the kit i think all up i spent around $1000 i started off with around $600 and then based on feedback i was getting bought other items i knew i was getting interest in!!!! I did find this a good way to build it up and some of it i knew i could use myself later on.

I did not have the payment plan option but would have liked it.

I think though the point of contact with the company, support, package of information would play the biggest role in my next venture moreso then the cost of thie kit.

I hope i have helped you a little.

mumofangels replied:

a friend of mine had to pay in excess of $50,000 for her hairdressing business ( 10years ago ), had no support from "upline" didn't get her business products subsided by anyone ( like most kits are) plus the cash flow was more out than in for a long while.

Party plan may not have a shop front, it may not cost a fortune but the potential to earn fanastic money is possible when you put in the effort. the product needs to be user friendly and fill a need and/or desire. And at this time in the economy - i'd be looking for a company with strong values, established history and most importantly a product that is not just a luxury item or a fashion item but a usable item that is value for money and fulfills a need.

The kit is your shop front and needs to look professional everytime it is displayed. it is when you pay "good" money into your kit then you will have a better connection to it and look after it.when you earn the money to pay for it you look after it and take ownership of it, what should be in a kit - well i'd take what a well established company offer to me as they are the experts and should know what sells best.sometimes a kit may be bigger than others but if it makes you money hey - look at it like a gym routine without the monthly fees.LOL

If something looks to good to be true - i ;love someof the ads in the paper - you knwo work from home and make $$$ they never mention a company name, don;t seem to be part of an industry body or even mention a street address.it looks like they are hiding something.

whatever your partyplan you look into to join needs to be something you love - or like strongly. Just do as much research as possible. ask lots of questions, and a party plan company that answers you honestly will win you over everytime.

when you are not happy you will not put in the necessary effort into the training and into the party.it is still a business.

just my personal opinion

all the best

FoodDude replied:

Hey Miss Prim and others,

I don't believe that the cost of the kit has any corellation to the value of your business and the business that you do;  more importantly a kit should be valuable enough for you to do business and have all of the things in it to get you to a party and get you earning straight away.

When we started Foodie Parties, we spoke to a number of different people in party plan, and the information that we got back was, you pay for your kit and then you have to buy all of this other stuff.  To that end, we set about to put together a really comprehensive kit that would allow people to go out there and start earning without having to outlay too much extra money. So, it is $399 to join and what do you get ????

Our kit is $200 and contains over $1,000 worth of goods. sadly there have been a number of people and a couple from this site that have just bought the kit as a cheap way of getting some product. It seems that they had no intention of selling product. Well it back fired as nothing within the kit matches.

We will be looking at raising the price again as we can not continue to wear this loss.

Marty

JustRachel replied:

Our kit is 249.95 and included is over $1100 in products and postage. We include a lingerie kit with about 9 pieces as well as a toy kit. We have three different options for the toy kit, either our standard, our romance kit (for anyone who doesnt want to sell toys) or our just toy kit (without any romance products). We then allow our pp'ers to purchase add ons at 50% off (for their kit or themselves) or purchase kit addons which have even better savings. We then also allow our partyplanners to pick and choose which products they would like to sell if not the whole range. Included in our kit to is over $100 of products for partyplanners to sell off straight away so they can make back half of their kit price as soon as stock as sold, which is usually done within a party or 2, and with the commions paid 30% and 50% they earn back their investment very quickly.
We also include catalogues, business materials to start etc.

I think the kit price definately has abit of an impact on choice, we've tried to keep ours as low as possible and dont like to make profit from any of our partyplanners trying to have the basics to run their business. We used to offer a $99 deposit option with paying the rest of but we were taken abit of advatnage of, so now upfront payment, but I think ours is affordable enough to allow that and still have a fantastic kit to start off with with a great range.

Great thread richy, hope it helps

Asterix replied:

I agree with Milenda and Mel here. It doesnt matter how much is the Kit worth as long as you love the products and you know you can do it and you know you can start your own business and be successfull with it and you know that you can sell the products and make money. You have to spend money to make money!!!

When i signed up i didn't care how much the price of the kit all i want is to signed up and start my own business  as i love the products and i love to sell and i love to be with people so i signed up and start the ball rolling be an Independent Distributor and it pays off.  I had my first order for the first month   $3,000 dollars worth of cosmetics and skin care as i want to have stock on hand to keep the business rolling . I only paid $1,500 dollars at 50% discount  so i was in front and  i start doing Glamour Demos, Expos, Fetes, Markets, Fundraisings, as there is no boundaries in our company and it is my business and can sell it Australia Wide. Our Products Works! and the career works! And our Products sell themselves. And I never look back that was 2 years ago and loving it!!!

I paid $ 480.00 dollars on my Demo Kit and if it is purchased at retail price the value is $ 3,000.00 dollars and i sell  some of it so i was in front. But i guess it is up to the individual what they think they can sell  and be successfull in business!!! You love the products, you love to sell, you love to wear it then go for it and you will be successfull in business!!!

P.S. I am sorry Marty . of what happened to the girls who signed up to be a consultant for ATI. The Kit is  $200.00 dollars and the products was worth $1,000 dollars if purchased in retail value  and they didnt sell or it didnt work for them..  Maybe they tried hard but just didnt work for them...But it will be the same with other companies.   As people signed up get the kit and don't sell   so you have to accept the loss thats the price you will pay as a businessman.  I woudn't do that to you. I will try to sell and try my heart out to get your money back. I can't sell products on ATI i am not good at it. I am only good in selling Cosmetics and Skin Care...

This topic is a very interesting one - it is showing so much for one to see and take on board, as to what is, and what is not.

Seeing there is adding going on, I am going to join the bandwagon, though not talk about who I am associated with. I will however make some balances..

Current life..

Many wholesalers/manufacturers hire and pay staff to go to work daily, and promote their product with in a retail environment eg: Breville, The Breville ladies get a kit for free, plus they get paid for promoting the Breville product, when they leave the company, they return their kit, which over the years they get to use, play with etc etc at home, and also upon leaving they stop getting paid, and can buy their kit at a heavely reduced price.

Their upfront cost = Nothing, yet are encouraged to consider their retail shop as their own = ownership.

Party planners, have to buy their kit, pay for mostly everything to run their shop lots of $$$$$$$, and when they stop, so does their money...

The above are both consultants promoting and selling products, yet clearly, one comes out on top at the end.. and the end of the day is really all that matters

Both do not have passive, or residual income....

Looking at a cosmetic company for woman, at least their DM"S up front say, "now anyway"... why should you pay to promote our product.... good question

Retail or RRP, of any kit can be inflated to suit the wholesaler, and advertising.. and RRP can look so much higher than go pricing...

really at the end of the day it is what comes out of YOUR pocket, to make money.

If going to spend a fortune on a kit, and I have read some scary pricing, why not go MLM, at least you get a residual income, when slowing down or stopping....

I have found this topic and interesting read also.

I completely agree that you need to firstly find a party plan that suits your passion and your interests, as it is easier to sell if you love what you do.

When developing the pricing stucture for Unique Kids Direct I was quite mindful of the fact that I wanted to offer a business opportunity for people to start their own business that did not cost a fortune and that was reasonable for a family situation. Our starter kits are only $250 and for that you get about 14-15 products, catalogues, a consultants manual, all paper work on a disk and a business card template. Most of the consultants have taken advantage of the 30% of RRP to add the specific items to their kit that their customers have requested to see.

I think that the price of the kit is relative to how well you think that you can sell the product to recoup the initial cost and then continue to earn more $$$ .

marina replied:

Looking in the paper under businesses, $14k for lawnmowing business,  $200,000 for a franchise,  25k for hairdressing salon

These are big prices to me.

To start your very own party plan is cheap in comparison which ever party plan you go into.

Hi There,

Gekho I find have a fantastic offer with their kit....You must have 4 confirmed bookings within a 2 week period and they will post out your kit before your first party....You can pay $440 up front and begin on 22% commission, or you can pay nothing up fron and get 15% for first 8 parties...I don't mind getting a smaller commission to start because I can't afford to pay upfront...and the amount of stuff I got in my kit was amazing....

Cheers

Wow - I did not realise kit prices of some products were so reasonable. I was thinking I would be up for quite a few hundred to get off the ground.

I am getting more and more interested in becoming a party planner by the minute! :)

Hi Jinny,

As you explore the forum and websites you will get a wider picture on the party plan scene.

For example the 3 companies i am with all start up costs are $200 and under for full value kits.

do your homework and i am sure you will find something that suits.

Cheers,

Margie

Kit price was definitely a thing for me. I'd considered joining Intimo, but the cost of the kit, plus needing to buy the new releases, was too much for me. As much as I love their stuff, I had to give it a miss.
What got me into PartyLite was the fact that the kit is free to anyone who hosts a $550 party, and my party got to $660, so that was that! To keep it without paying, I have to host 6 parties within my first month, but that seems do-able, as there are already three PartyLite addicts in my family!
Even better, my Sponsor is holding off my sign-up until March, because the gift for joining in March is a whole heap of extra product - a pack of current pieces, and a pack of discontinued stuff which will be perfect for prizes and giveaways! So I end up with a total kit value of $1,000.
As soon as it arrives, I'll be starting on those six parties!

Wow....lot's to digest in this post.....

I'm with Marina...looking under business'....wow what an expense....when you can have your very own business with limited overheads...for minimal cost....why wouldnt you go with a PP you will enjoy, no matter what the initial outlay is..you are sure to make your money back on the kit easily.....

All worth it in the long run.................

Cheers..Kathy

As an Intimo consultant your answer interested me Kat.

The Intimo kit is $490 which is recouped usually within your first month because of the initial 8 bookings in 3 weeks sign up requirement which also ensures the best program to achieve the first promotion,  a $100 voucher.  You are paid fortnightly for the first 3 months also.

As for new releases you don't have to buy them.  At most I buy a brief in a range just to demonstrate fabric feel and look.  The Instyle bras are based on Essential bra shapes so we don't need to invest in the instyle stuff at all as our basic kit will fit across the range.  Most of the time I spend nothing on the new releases because the Intimo voucher promotions are so achieveable.  So I usually end up paying nothing for my new release pieces and when they are finished I sell the samples for cash which I usually reinvest half back into my kit.

Wow...  I got a bit long winded didn't I?  rofl...

Long winded?

No Kelly - I though you gave an excellent clear explanation.
