I am in a street fair next weekend and am not near any shade or shelter! Is there anything portable that is free standing that is easy for one person to put up? I have been looking at the big um brellas but have only seen heavy concrete or iron bases. Is there anything else?

I use a pop up marquee which I believe cheap shops like the warehouse or crazy clarks have them for $75 at the moment.  Otherwise you could spend more and go to some place like anaconda.

good luck

A pop up shade marquee is ideal for these things.
A couple of things to consider:

  • Check the pegs - it may be worth investing in some longer/stonger tent pegs
  • If you are not in an area where you can bang into the ground, remember to take something to weigh it down. Ice cream containers with sand/rocks, concrete block etc
  • If you are going to use it more often, consider the dearer steel frames as the aluminium ones can bend easily - they also come with a waterproof cover
  • Oztrail have been my favourite brand - I have a collection of the cheaper versions gathering dust or binned. BCF often have these on special
  • Trick for erection if on your own - have a strap eg : occy or rocket strap to hook onto a something eg trailer, roo bar etc and pull out the frame from the opposite corner. This will pull the frame out enough to pop up the main legs manually.
  • Put the cover over the frame and secure before you raise the legs to full height
  • While raising the legs to full height, never let go until you have it secured - that gust of wind always comes around about then !!

I was in a similar postion last weekend.

After have a marquee the required an army of people to assemble, I invested in a 3x3 from bunnings that is expandable. Very much worth the $$$ ($149). Very strong material that is water resistant and tent pegs and bag with wheels included, makes it perfect for 1 person.

Hope the stall goes well!
