Discussions : Off your chest... : Too efficient

With my husbands retrenchment I was forced back into the conventional workforce. Due to my age 50+, despite having worked 25 years in administration and the last 10 of those supervising a Personnel department, I was no longer suited to re enter the workforce in an admin capacity. (although companies will never admit to this).
For the past year I have been working in the deli dept, with one of the major supermarkets. Too old to work in an office, but suitable to work in a cold room, packing fish lifting and stocking boxes 10-20kg. Most people may think that working in a deli is just the serving and slicing of meat, unaware of the other not so pleasant duties. This supermarket is almost an hours drive from my house down the freeway doing 110km.
Salvation, a cashiers position became available at one of the supermarkets just 20mins from home. Arranged a transfer form with the store manager which had to be attached with an appraisal form. My appraisal, excellent. All boxes were rated at the highest level of work ethic, customer service and efficiency.
Followed thru today with HR to see what the progress was, to find out that my home store has failed to forward the paperwork on.
The message being, if you are a good worker they will sabotage your release. I am so angry I feel like crying. When I return to work on my next shift, I will just have to abuse a couple of customers, stock product in the incorrect areas, become totally inefficient, so they will reccomend me to another store, just to get rid of me.
Obviously it does not pay to have a strong work ethic.

Hi Cris,
the same thing happened to me years ago when i was working at the tax office.
I was trying for more than a year to get a promotion and nothing was happening
and i didn't know why. A new supervisor started in our area and i spoke to him about my distress.
He said that the previous supervisor was not letting me get promoted because he would
have lost a very efficient worker!!
I couldn't believe it! Boy was I furious!

I have heard so many people come up against this and the bottom line is you have to fight for the right to work where you want to, so don't give up.
My pet hate was being told I was 'over qualified' - what the .... how can anyone be over qualified for any position. My belief is that I was in fact 'more' qualified that the dip sitting in front of me.
Good luck, and don't stop fighting until you get the position you want where you want.

Yes, don't get me started with that 'overqualified b.shit'. Without going into too much of a soap opera. I met my husband when he was in the navy having started as a fitter and turner apprentice, retiring after 20 years as a marine engineer/trainer. Re invented himself to take on civilian qualifications in adult education and training and moved up the ladder to eventually become a national HR manager prior to retrenchment.
Applied for every job under the sun, to not even get a look in because HE WAS OVER QUALIFIED
I on the other hand despite my quals which I gained over 6 years part time whilst working (sociology& industrial relations), have to work as a cleaner & deli assist, plus having an outstanding HECS debt for the priveledge of having studied and the opportunity of the super dooper job which I will never get.
At least when you join a pp company, nobody cares how old you are, where you come from too fat, too skinny, blonde/brunette, male/female. Your success is in your own hands.
How do I telll my 12 year old son, study hard because it will open many opportunities?
