(American vs British English)

What word would you use to sell it in Australia (or google search for it)? (and why?)

I won't say which I know is right..

SaucyKath replied:

When typing about our company I always type it as Jewellery.   However, I always submit both ways you mentioned above in my adwords with Google and also Jewellry.

Anyone else?

UCWDanielle replied:

I always think of it as Jellewery.

ExMember148 replied:

The English language sucks anyway.  No wonder non english speaking persons have difficulty.

Jewellery

Lilygirl_wytch replied:

That's not nice [ExMember148] - Hush!  Jewellery is the correct way if you are into publishing, editing or proofreading, as this is what Australia follows with the style guide.  However we also use jewelry when writing anything to do with the UK origins.

I prefer jewellery as this is the preferred way in Australia.

I just noticed how I spelt Jewellery in my previous post.   How bad was that.

I really have to start getting to bed earlier!!!

MJ78 replied:

jewellery - always has and always will be.

ExMember148 replied:

I have a high standard of English, both spoken and written.  So I back up my previous statement fully.  There are soooooooo many words that are not spelt the way they are said.  And so many variances.  Colour - color, potato/tomato.  I have an email somewhere, with words that are said the same, spelt the same, but mean the total opposite.  It is such very interesting reading.

Lilygirl_wytch replied:

I know what you mean.  I have worked as a professional editor and proofreader previously and still do occaisionally.  So from a proofreaders point of view, even though it annoys you, you still have to be respectful to the fact that the english language is a whole art on its own LOL!  and I especially love the UK english language as it is so colourful!

cheers mate!

tee hee!

I actually thought your first post was just a clever joke.

Oh well!

Mr PP are you going to let us "in" on the correct answer?   Are we all right?

Good qustion....I did a lot of research while in the USA establishing VALESKA as it confused me as well!.

Kelly replied:

As a teacher I saw all manner of different spelling for words that you would assume could only be spelt one way - boy was I ever wrong!

The problem lies in spellchecking on computers being set to american standard english which it turns out is different to the UK which in turn is different to Australian standard english and so on...

No wonder the poor kids get confused!

candlekaren replied:

It's jewellery in Australia. The Americans spell everything wrong!
