Poor little Colin...

I just heard on the news that darling little Colin has been put to sleep. I feel so sad that so little was done to help him. There was an article on tele last night about a whale formula they already have (in the states I think) that has been successful, they even showed the recipe on screen. Why didn't the powers that be at least try this? I know some will say Colin was past the point of no return, but a decent rescue attempt should have been started days earlier, when there may have still been a chance of saving him.

I know there are factors that we lay people don't understand, but it looked to me like those so-called experts just sat on their hands until it was too late. He was swimming around the bay for days before they even bothered to come and see him. If he was going to die anyway, surely anything would have been worth a try.

I also find it hard to believe that, with all the research that's been done on whales over the years, that they still don't know the formula for whale milk! That would seem an obvious thing to find out.  I'd better stop now!!!

I think whales are a graceful as the next person but the reality is it would have had to be placed in captivity for the rest of its life. My question is how would you plan on not only feeding him but also produce enough milk to keep him alive? From what i understand he had been attacked by sharks - this may have been why the mother had abandoned him in the first place. The injuries may not have been healing

As sad as it was that this baby whale had to be euthanized.. Nature does have it's own way of dealing with things. We have to accept that his mother abandoned him for a reason.. she did not have the ability to save him so how could "we"

I thought that whales traveled in pods/groups, if this is the case and the group could save him them surely he would not have been trying to suckle from boats in the harbor.

The authorities did what they believed was right... it may not be what others believe, but it was what was done. Hopefully it will mean that they will now start looking for ways to save "Colins" of the future and learn from this very hard lesson.
