Discussions : General discussion : What are you reading at the moment?

I am re-reading "Fortunes Rocks" by Anita Shreve. I read it a few years ago, but re-reading it now for my book club. It's set in 1899, about a young girl and a much older married man who fall in love. Very beautifully written, somewhat controversial I guess - made for very heated discussion at book club!  I have read all her other work and really like her.

Who is reading anything interesting?

Chels

hi chels,

at present i am reading THE SECRET RIVER by KATE GRENICH (or something like that last name - i can't be bothered to get off my fat a*** and go look hehe)

i love reading! any spare moment apart from checking out pp i am sitting with a book in front of my face.

recently i have read -

when ghosts speak - based on the ghost whisperer that they based the tv series on

the butterfly man - about an english man that killed his nanny and then his life after

red leaves - paullina simons (she is my favourite author) - fantastic read!

how to run a business from your kitchen table - barbara gabogrecan - very good for home based businesses

plus a lovey dovey - secret destinies - it has two books in it - kind of mills and boon

but please send me any suggestions for good books via this thread as i love getting curled up with a good read!

the other week I finished ESCAPE by carolyn Jessop and Laura Palmer. Its about the Fundamentalist Lattery Day Saints (FLDS) the polygamus sect in america and how carolyn ranaway. An insight into a twisted world. I couldnt put it down because i couldnt believe the things that went on. Has anyone else read this book?

ejsmum replied:

PrincessLauren, I haven't read that book but it does sound interesting - fact is often far stranger than anything you could make up.

I love Paullina Simons too! - The Bronze Horsemen would be in my Top 10 books of all time.  If you like her, you would probably like Jodi Picoult.  Her earlier work is very good (Salem Falls, The Pact, My Sister's Keeper, Plain Truth) but I am starting to lose interest in her newer stuff.

Some of my other favourites.....

"Wicked" by Gregory Maguire - it's about the life of the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy arrives in Oz - and the musical is coming to Melbourne this year.... not sure if it's going to be good or a disappointment, but can't wait to see it anyway.  I've read the book MANY times...

"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini - amazing and heart wrenching

"The Book Thief" by Marcus Zusack

"Memoirs of a Geisha" by Arthur Golden

"The Time Traveller's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger - one of the most original books you will ever read

And of course I am a HUGE Harry Potter freak, so I recommend everyone read them - they are definately NOT just for kids!!

And if you like something a little dark, I recommend Clive Barker's "The Great and Secret Show"; anything by Anne Rice, but the first books in the Vampire Chronicles, as well as the Mayfair Witches trilogy are her best; and the "Dark Tower" series by Stephen King.

When I think of some more (brain a bit fuzzy - just a few glasses of wine with Mother's Day lunch) i'll post them too.

And no - no one can have it! Its all mine!

noone replied:

I'm not telling you what I just read, its so not as interesting as what you girls are all reading LOL.

Oh ok haha I'm a historical romance fan, just finished a trilogy by Julie Garwood "The Clayborne Brides".

I'm working my way through Julie Garwood, Jude Devereaux, Amanda Quick and my all time favourite Johanna Lindsay... (always looking to get hold of second hand copies of any I don't have!!)

Also enjoyed Jeffrey Archer and Australian historical classics such as the EV Timms series.

Ok so I'm a sucker for romantic stories LOL

A little 'light' reading.

ah, COOL...........

ejsmum replied:

Yay - more Harry freaks!!  For about a week after I read the final book I was really depressed and couldn't read anything else, because it just felt like there would never be anything as fantastic again in my lifetime. (Yes very dramatic I know)

I read the Celestine Prophecy a million years ago (feels like it) and loved it - may have to revisit.
