When I go to "My Events" there's a box that says "+ 1 event(s) awaiting your response"...when I click on it a pop up type box appears with the same message, which I then close and it disappears, meanwhile the original box is still there.
There is nothing on my calendar, when I go to "browse event" there's a list of about 14 events and when I click on them it says "Private Event".
So how can I see which event is actually waiting for me to respond?

Have you tried going into the box that comes up when you click on it and selecting any of the options? Or just closing it and trying to go through the calendar?
You should be able to view, rsvp and remove the event all from that one box.
I have tried today and have had no problems...

FIXED!!
The event was 'private'. You were not a member yet, so could not see it.
People can now see what they are invited to - even if it is private.
