Many of you know I have a gorgeous little 2 yr old girl. Well recently she was diagnosed with coeliac disease - which means not wheat or wheat based products. Fine we can deal with that the alternatives arent that bad. My question is how on earth can they justify charging more than double the price for products that people need otherwise they get sick??

A loaf of gluten free bread - $6!

Gluten free biscuits - well over $5!

Doesnt make sense to me. Can you believe that even 100's and 1000's have wheat in them??

Hi kelly,

a friend of mine has coeliac's disease and I can totally understand how you feel.  It is very expensive!

However, my friend learnt alot about how to cut expenses and here are some of the suggestions she has.

Firstly - invest in a bread maker, in the long run you are saving yourself 100's of dollars and you can leave out gluten and make your own gluten free breads, dough's etc.

Farmers markets are great for organic fruits and vege that you can tolerate,

rice based foods, check out the standard products in the grocery dept as some are actually gluten free as well, just not put in the health area.

yoghurt, low GI are often gluten free, just check the labels.

other than that, check out some of the cooking show websites like FRESH they often have recipes and resource info on gluten free products and where to buy them.  I believe Freedom foods, in one such brand.

good luck and I hope this helps

Hi Kelly

Mel here from Foodie Parties.  I hear what you are saying loud and clear !!  We market a number of Gluten Free Products that are reasonab ly priced.  In particular our Foodie Freelac Bread Mix which is Gluten Wheat and Lactose Free.  The best thing about this bread is that you can make it by hand and it requires no kneading.  The bread mix can also be used to make batters, crepes, etc.  Check out our website (click on the brochure) to see our other Gluten Free products as well.

In reponse to why the expense, my thoughts are that a lot of research and product development goes into these products and therefore manufacturers need to recoup their costs in this area.  Over the next few years, I believe you will see a significant reduction in the price of these products as more and more people are medically diagnosed coeliac (coeliac disease is more common now than it was 10 years ago) and more and more people stop eating gluten products (it is quite prevalent at the moment for people to follow gluten free diets because it is beneficial for their wellbeing).  The R & D costs will be recouped more quickly, their will be more competition in the marketplace for a slice of the gluten free market and in turn the manufactuers will need to lower their costs.

Good luck with it all, and if I can help you out with anything gluten free (particularly the bread mix that we can get for you in bulk) please contact me by pm or thru the web.

Cheers

Melinda

Hi Kelly,

My sister has to have gluten free products and was in a tiff at the start. All she did was ring some of the big name companies and ask them to send her a list of all the gluten free products they make. She rang Cottees and they were lovely to talk to. They just sent her a list in the mail. It's worth a try and then your shopping trip will be much easier than trying to read labels all the time. My sister was also peeved at the price of the breads and other stuff. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
