Discussions : Goals and ambitions : Am i being unreasonable?
Mandy wrote:
I recently had a chat with my partner the other day and shared my short term goals for my business next year and the reward i am going to give myself for acheiving my goal. I thought the reward would be a good way to keep my eyes on the goal when obsticles get in my way.
My goal is between March and May (3 months) to personally sell $15.000 and my reward for that will be a week away to kangaroo island here in SA.
I have already got all the information about the trip away and how much its going to cost and how we are going to get there and when etc and my partner thinks i am mad. He said i am setting myself up to fail and planning ahead of time for our trip away is mad when imy goal is unreasonable and i havent even reached the goal yet.
He thinks i shouldnt set sales targets and just "go with the flow" and see what happens. I have seen and done this all to often and seeing what happening and going with the flow in my opinon is setting yourself up for failure.
He thinks if i must set sales targets to set them low. Like $50 or $100 each week.
I am working a 4 day week next year and am aiming to sell $312.50 each day.
Please share your thoughts with me.

Hi Mandy
I guess I would need more info from you first - what are you selling, are you just starting or have you been going a while and have some sore of track record you can go by?

If you have a goal to work towards you are more likely to have more successful parties, however, set realistic goals too.
As ladybug said, how long have you been in the business (have you got an established client base?) and what are you selling?
$312.50 per DAY seems a little too specific. Is that per day that you work, or every week day? With all goals you need room to move, so to speak, so maybe look to $500 a week to start with, if you can maintain that for a few weeks running, look to $800 etc...
good luck, and I hope you get to KI, because it will be beautiful in March/April!

Thanks for your responses and kind words. I have been with my company for nearly 4 years and have a small customer base. I havent been working the business due to health problems. I am going to give it my best shot next year.
I am selling skin care. I am looking to sell the $312.50 each day i work. I hope i get to KI as well :)

go for it Mandy,
as they say, if you aim for nothing you will hit it every time, I would rather fall 20% short of your goal that achieve 200% of what you partner is suggesting

Will he still think you're mad when he's relaxing with you on a lovely holiday
I think it's important to have something to aim for, but don't be discouraged if you don't quite make it.
I am aiming for $4000 in sales and 10 parties for March. Now, honestly I don't know if I can make it, but it's going to give me something high (for me!) to reach for all the same!
Good luck with it all!

sometimes sharing your goals with someone can bring you down.. then you start having doubts like now and you lose your passion and excitement.. Maybe just keep your goals to yourself and that way no one can plant anything negative on your mind,
the only tip i have is and i do this myself.. I never concentrate on the dollar value of sales..
sales will happen and how much, i do not know. i never push the sales and i have high shows and low shows, but they all add up.
the only thing i do is concentrate on my bookings as with out bookings i have not got sales.
if you have 10-13 shows a month you should make your target sales....
so basically book book book and you will get the sales and then your holiday.

Hi Mandy
Good on you for setting some specific goals. Its always the first place to start. Remember to really associated to why achieving your goal is important to you. Your WHY is the most important aspect of goal setting. Challenges are going to come up, its just part of life and having a powerful why it will help you to stay on track.
I've always found that actually achieving the goal is only part of the reward. The greatest reward is the person you become as a result of achieving your goal. Just think how much more confident, sure of your ability, decisive, organised and determined will become by achieving your goal.
If you aim for the moon and fall short and hit a star you will still win. Those who fail are those who fail to get started, so go for it!!!

Hi Mandy,
I just read this thread and wondered how you are going with your goal?

I can understand how hard it is to feel you're not getting the full support you want with a goal but I'd guess you've known him long enough to know what his fears and concerns are as well as knowing that he's a separate person to you and you can have your own dreams and goals in life.
It is much better to set higher goals and miss them by a tad than to have really low hopes and maybe get there. What's that saying? When you aim for the moon you land in the stars!
You would know enough about your business to know what is possible, pushing the edges of the envelop and giving it a really solid go. So go for it.
Success is all in the head space, it is all about your own internal dialogue and believing in yourself and you can do it.
If he is a flea in your ear about failure have a good quite talk with him, say if he hasn't anything positive to say about what you're doing then don't say anything until he has it within himself to. There's nothing particularly bad about disappointment - it isn't the best feeling but it isn't the worst either. Hope is a far better spirit to have than accepting fear of disappointment. We all have our limitations, we just don't have to always accept them.
I hope you're having a really good year with it and finding ways to make your dreams and concrete goals happen.
All the best,
Belinda
