I think 43 minutes max travel time (each way) would be a good guide. A certain % of parties are flops.. and I think that is close to the maximum 'profit vs risk' time. Of course distance in 43 min +/- varies depending on where you live too.
I recall one time my wife (hotfrangipani) travelled from the Sunshine Coast to a Brisbane suburb (about 1 hour each way) and the host was not even home!! Needless to say she was quite upset and angry when she got home >
Also, the Australian Tax office allows about AU.50c per Km for vehicle usage (fuel, wear and tear/maintainence)... so that was about an $80 loss.
