What a pain...and....what do you think?

Last week I spent a whole day cleaning out my 2 pantries... and I love them to be absolutely perfect.  All neat, stacked well and always fresh.  So I clean them out all the time...

Before I continue....your probably wondering why I have 2 pantries?  One for everyday use...the other for reserved stock.  I have just about double of everything!  The idea is that we have enough food for months should any emergencies happen!  Korney I know!

To my horror, my reserve pantry had been attacked by a mouse.... every packet had holes in it.  Cake mixes, coconut, powdered milk etc.  So I lost just over half my stock there.....

My everyday pantry was full of weavils!  Every container was full of them!  Flours, grains.....everything BUT what was in my Tupperware containers?  My whole pantry is full of cheapy plastic containers with a tiny section of Modular Mates.....hmmm.

I loooove Tupperware and have such a big collection of it but never bothered with the Modular mates.  After the waste of food displayed....OK I got the hint!

Now I must ask you all....is it true that the cold kills weavils and their eggs?   I was told to always put any floury type of ingredients into the freezer for overnight before packing away in the pantry and this is guaranteed to kill them.... is this true or are you sitting there thinking what on earth is she waffling on about!

Waiting to hear what you think!

Janine replied:

Tanya I too have heard about putting flour in the freezer overnight to kill bugs etc.. that maybe in it. I do not know how true this is though. I am sure that one of the many Tupperware girls on here would be able to tell us more.

ExMember148 replied:

I am a Tupperholic, and ex tupperware manager.  So I would be killed for saying this.  I still get weavils in my flours in Tupperware!  I now have to keep my flours in the fridge.  It works, no more weavils ever.  Flour lasts forever.  Its easy to do, I still even use my tupperware in the fridge for them, my top shelf is my flours shelf (ok, upside down fridge here!)

Yes, 2 pantries is a bit bizarre.  Spose good idea for some emergencies, but what about a Tsunamai (spelling?) - then your poor little pantries would be washed away . (and you are close to the coast line!!)

Janine replied:

Tanya - I too stock up when there is a good buy. I have 1 shelf in the pantry for excess and then I have another shelf in another cupboard for all non-food items. I was thinking that another pantry would be great for storage of excess.

Zammy replied:

I hate to break it to the Tupperware ladies, but even the best product is not going to stop something that is already there.
Weavils come in your flour! My partner worked at the flour mill, where ALL the flour is packaged and you would be honestly disgusted with the conditions girls.
I'm not sure about cold killing them, but from Julie's info, it sure sounds that way.
Once you've killed 'em, you should be able to safely store your flour on the shelf in a GOOD container.
Sorry if that was a bit gross, but I figure it's some info worth sharing.

Zammy replied:

2 pantries! Awesome!!
I'm jealous! I'm a food storer from WAY back and I hate my tiny tiny kitchen!

ExMember148 replied:

OK. So now your making me feel like I have to reveal my deepest DARKEST excess secrets.

I have a phobia of running out of toilet paper, washing powder and soap.  So watch out when my brands are on special...........

CKCath replied:

Yes it's true  the weevils are in the flour right from the start when you buy it. It is also true that if you place your flour in the freezer overnight you will have no more weevils. Not sure that you need to keep it in the fridge after that though. Just freeze and then into the container you store it in.

I love the idea of two pantries, however my second one would no doubt end up filled with craft supplies instead of food, after all that is what happened to our "spare" bedroom, it no longer contains a bed as that took up too much of the crafting space.

hotfrangipani replied:

2 pantries are very handy...I converted my broom cupboard in the kitchen to another pantry...that's why I have two!  he he  (I brought heaps of those stackable wire shelves from a cheapy shop...see [ExMember148]!  Told you I love the cheapy shops! LOL)

I have been freezing the packets of flour in the freezer...before it is put into containers....maybe that's the problem?  My giant glass jars dont fit in my freezer!  aaarrrhhh!

Hmmm.....thanks for your advice and tips guys....gals...everyone!

Zammy replied:

hahaha Cath, your not-so-secret crafting obsession is brilliant! I'd love to convert our spare bedroom into a display room for my garments, but my partner has to sleep in there when I snore so I can't hehe

Zammy replied:

Just got some info from my partner.
Apparently the freezer will work for the weevils, but not the eggs which is why you'll still end up with them later.
The only way to remove the eggs is to sift your flour, so I guess that's an option :)

mangoscrapping replied:

Hi Ladies

sorry to hear you have weavils,

what you need to do, is freeze all flours packet mixes etc for 24 - 48 hours in your freezer when you bring them home.

all of these powdered products are in your packets when you bring them home.

then put the on the bench to bring them down to room temperature and then into your tupperware containers, you will never have another weavil again if you do this.

Modular Mates are airtight and keep out all the nasties that wonder around your cupboard when the door is shut,

as a tupperware demonstrator, I have just completed my cupboard and have to say not only did I gain more space I have eliminated all my bugs.

I have just sent you the new update for May it is full of special deals on modulas this month.

As tupperware ladies we know that tupperware will not eliminate weavils if you don't freeze your products first.

Call me Tanya I can help you to Modula mate your pantry.

mangoscrapping replied:

[ExMember148] -

Tupperware is just a container you can't keep the weavils out if you put them in there as eggs, they can hibernate for months in the packet, you need to freeze your flours first this kills any eggs that are in your flour.

weavils actually live in any type of dry foods even your rolled oats and cereals.

so remember if your bring it home and put it straight in the container then you will get weavils no matter how good the container.

mumofangels replied:

i'd prefer to have weevils than Nits ( just spent hours doing the boys hair ) and they are on HOLIDAYS !!!!! Urgggh

can i put my kids heads in the freezer too - would that work??? ha LOL LOL

angelfouad replied:

LOL you guys really made me laugh and I dont even know what weevils are!

But i can't believe that there are eggs in my food!

Does that mean if u don't freeze or even put them into containers you'll 100% have weevils???

I can't believe this!

mangoscrapping replied:

Hi

not always guaranteed to get the eggs but they are about 95% of all flours and etc that you buy.

freeze all you flours etc and they will never hatch, and it won't effect your flour.

If you do what I have caught myself doing and putting into the container before you freeze it, put a peice of paper towel in the top of the container and then put it in your freezer with no lid on for the 24 hours, the paper towels stops any moisture from getting to your flour and then just take the  container out and let it come back to room temperature before you put the seal on.

By the way when you cook with your flour it also definately kills any bugs that where in it and they are so tiny you would never no they are there.

have fun freezing flour

TrendyClothes4Kids replied:

Eww, eww, eww, eww!!!!  I did baking today with 'non-frozen' flour and I am totally yucked out now!!!  I'm going to check my flour right now!!!
Eww!!

mangoscrapping replied:

did you find any?

dont worry the cooking process will kill them off too.

just freeze all you flour from now on and you won't have to think about it again

TrendyClothes4Kids replied:

Nope, didn't find a thing   Phew!
Just bought some more today, however I don't have any room in the freezer, as did a huge shop!  Aarrrggghhh!  Can't win!
Thanks for making me aware anyway!
