As A teacher I had some problems with my throat bleeding due to over use and for some reason in the past few days its started again. So doing as I was told by the other half I took myself off to the doctors to get checked out.
Perhaps its just me but I found it very funny when he told to talk as little as possbile until we get all these tests done. I dont think he was listening when I told him what I do for a living! I still find it very amusing

Your throat BLEEDs from talking too much!!!!!!!!! Oh my Lord. As a teacher also my throat hurts for you. As a music teacher I say, go thou now and get thee some vocal coaching. Seriously. If you use your voice correctly you will no longer strain your throat. If you use your voice correctly you don't use your throat at all. Do you shout a lot? I can't believe you bleed!!! Don't allow yourself to end up with no voice at all. If this is caused by your teaching then you should be able to get workers comp and then have some time off and use that money to help with a few voice lessons. If you went for a term you'd have heaps of exercises you could do in the car on the way to school and over the term you'd be checked out properly while you do the exercises so you'd know you were doing them properly. (By the way, get a good teacher. There's some shonky ones out there)
Having expressed my horror I will now say that doctor didn't listen to your job description at all did he.

its one of the many reason i gave up teaching. I dont believe in shouting at kids no matter how crazy they drive you. i was very run down at the time and got no relief because it was such a tiny little country school and the teacher i was meant to be working with got sent on leave due to his incompetence. got left with a class of twenty which is small but it was 3 different grades, parent interviews, PD, reports the usual.
my eldest child thinks i have an odd sense of humour cause i laughed most of the way home from the doctors at the irony of it all

Oh at least you've given up teaching. You had me really worried for a while there. I would still get vocal coaching so you can do your classes better. Some singing teachers know quite a lot about the throat mechanics so they would be able to understand what the doctor has explained and give you exercises that focus on what is weak.
I can understand you laughing. My sense of humour is a little off centre too.

Kelly I fully understand about laughing at the doctor. I have had major throat problems over the last 12months and I finally got to see a specialist earlier this year. Lucky no damaged has been done to my vocal cords but I constantly sound croaky and sick due to being so sick. Time heals but in the mean time I am off to my local speech pathology to help me to use my voice properly so I do not strain it while it is recoving.
The first time the doctors told me to rest me voice I nearly choked. I replied "yeh okay sounds easy epecially with a 2yr old and 5yr old". My own doctor she fully understood and laughed along with me because what a joke not speaking at all with kids at home. I had to quit work as I was finding that I was too run down from being sick plus the strain on my voical cords where also making me feel unwell.
I hope you test have postive results like mine and fingers crossed you just need to learn how to use you voice again with straining.
Cheers
Janine

Oh Kelly
As a teacher and a party planner - that's what we do best - talk.
Gosh, really give it as much rest as you can, I know after a really busy weekend of 4 or more parties or an expo, I totally lose my voice and just in general get yucky and need about a week to recover. I put that down to being so generally unfit!!! I bet your doing all the right things you were told to you, lots of fluid, rest, suck throat soothers.
Best wishes and love to you at this stressful time.

That sounds just horrible!!!!
In a past life (or if any body wants to hire me now) I spruik - Blah Blah Blah Sell Sell Sell Shout Shout Shout.
The most that would happen to me over a 4 hour shift was that I would start to strain, and that is why 4 hours was a max shift, with 15 mins of each hour resting my voice.
When I finished or got home I really would not talk a great deal unless I had too, as if I had a shift the next day, I would want my vocals rested...
I agree with Mezz maybe get some vocal and breathing training, it would be fun and at the same time you might meet new contacts.
OH and if anybody wants to spriuk (IT"S A GOOD JOB FOR EXTRA MONEY) generally anywhere between $30.00 and $45.00 per hour gross, just ring up your local events, promotional companies and see if they have anything going, and you generally only work the busy spread of hours.
