IDN23900 TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST NSW TSUNAMI WARNING Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology New South Wales Issued at 0818 on Monday the 2nd of April 2007 For people in coastal areas of New South Wales, Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island. An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 8.1 occurred at 06:40 am EST this morning near the Solomon Islands, [epicentre 8.6S, 157.2E] and may have generated a tsunami. At the time of this warning it is not known if a Tsunami was generated. This warning is based only on an evaluation of the earthquake's potential to generate a Tsunami. A series of waves associated with this tsunami may impact Australia later this morning, reaching Norfolk Island from around 12:08 pm [Norfolk Island time], Lord Howe Island from around 11:16 am [Lord Howe Island time] and the NSW coastline between 11:00 am and midday. Dangerous waves and currents may affect beaches, harbours and rivers for several hours from the time of impact and low-lying coastal areas could be flooded. The waves can be separated in time by between ten to sixty minutes and the first wave of the series may not be the largest. The NSW State Emergency Service advises that: · People at the beach should leave the beach, and any areas exposed to surf, and move to higher ground. · People in boats in shallow water should immediately return to land, secure vessels and move to higher ground. · Boats and ships at sea should move to deep water and not return to harbour until advised that it is safe to do so. · If you see the sea go out like a very low tide then immediately go to high ground. · People should keep listening to the local media for updated information and advice and follow instructions and advice from emergency services This warning will be updated by 11:00 am. This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218 The Bureau and NSW State Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.

Although the threat has somewhat eased (according to the radio) please be aware there is a warning also for QUEENSLAND.  At the moment is A-ok in Cairns and Cooktown.

TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST TSUNAMI BULLETIN TSUNAMI THREAT TO EASTERN AUSTRALIA and Willis and Barrier Reef Islands, Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii has detected an undersea earthquake near Solomon Islands and has issued a Tsunami Bulletin. The earthquake has also been detected by Geoscience Australia. UPDATED ***** Willis Island Meteorological station reported NO noticable affect of waves at 9am by which time the Tsunami should have passed. They are checking to see if there has been any affect to beaches. At this stage the Threat seems to have eased, will maintain the warnings until after any wave may pass near Cooktown after 9.30am. ***** AN EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED WITH THESE PRELIMINARY PARAMETERS ORIGIN TIME - 6:40 am EST 02 APR 2007 COORDINATES - 8.6 SOUTH 157.2 EAST LOCATION - SOLOMON ISLANDS MAGNITUDE - 8.1 Based on the magnitude and location of the earthquake, tsunami could start affecting these locations at the following local time: Cooktown from 0931am 02/04/2007 Cairns from 0949am Brisbane 1033am Gladstone 1139am Mackay 1144am This bulletin is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts and the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au/tsunami/ Dangerous waves and currents may affect beaches, harbours and rivers for several hours from the time of impact and low- lying coastal areas could be flooded. The Queensland State Emergency Service advises that people should stay away from low lying coastal areas. This warning will be updated by this morning. This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218 The Bureau of Meteorology and Emergency Management Queensland would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.

An earthquake of magnitude 8.1 occurred at 06:40 am EST this morning near the Solomon Islands, [epicentre 8.6S, 157.2E] generated a tsunami, and associated Tsunami warning. Only small rises in sea level, [of the order of 10cm], were associated with this Tsunami on the NSW coast and it no longer poses a threat to the coastline or Islands. Unusual currents may continue to affect beaches, harbours and rivers mouths over the next 24 hours. The NSW State Emergency Service advises that people can return to normal activity with caution. No further warnings are expected be issued for this event. This warning is also available through TV and Radio broadcasts; the Bureau's website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 218 The Bureau and NSW State Emergency Service would appreciate this warning being broadcast regularly.
